Professor Jiří Neužil from the Institute of Biotechnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences has received the Distinguished Collaborative Research Fellow Award from the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research in New Zealand.

The award highlights a long-standing international collaboration that led to a landmark discovery in cancer biology.

Together with Professor Mike Berridge, Prof. Neužil contributed to the groundbreaking finding that mitochondria can be transferred between cells, including between healthy and cancerous cells. This phenomenon, known as horizontal mitochondrial transfer, has opened a new field of research with important implications for cancer and cell biology.

The collaboration between the two teams has continued for more than a decade and has resulted in numerous joint publications in leading international journals.
