The Institute of Biotechnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IBT) achieved excellent results in the government's Evaluation of Research Organizations according to Methodology 2017+ (M17+) for the period 2019–2023.

Module 1 (Quality of selected results)

In Module 1, which assesses the quality of selected research outputs, the IBT ranked among research organizations with the highest share of results rated as grade 1. Together with the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, it is one of only two institutions that achieved a predominance of top ratings. Moreover, in the most recent assessment year (2023), IBT had no results rated worse than grade 2.

Module 2 (Bibliometrics)

According to the bibliometric analysis (Module 2) of the main field, biological sciences, IBT achieved a better ratio of publications in prestigious journals than the EU15 average during the period under review.

  • The share of publications in journals in the first decile (D1) according to the AIS** indicator reached 22% (compared to the EU15 average of 18%).
  • The share of publications in journals in the first quartile (Q1) was 78% (compared to the EU15 average of 51%).

AIS, Article Influence Score, is a bibliometric metric that measures the average influence of articles in a journal during the first five years after their publication. Unlike Impact Factor (IF), it does not count self-citations and takes into account the prestige of the journals from which the citations come – citations from more prestigious journals carry more weight.

Success of the entire Academy of Sciences

The excellent results of BTÚ must be viewed in the context of the long-term high standard of the entire Czech Academy of Sciences. Compared to other providers of institutional support, the Academy of Sciences as a whole maintains a very good position.

In the period 2019–2023, almost 60% of its outputs were rated 1 or 2, and almost 90% of its outputs were rated 1–3. This is one of the best rankings among institutional support providers.

This overall success of the CAS confirms that high-quality science is a long-term priority within the Academy.

About the M17+ Methodology

The M17+ methodology is the government's official tool for evaluating research conducted in five-year cycles. Each year, the quality of results is assessed separately (Module 1) and a bibliometric analysis is performed (Module 2).

The quality assessment in Module 1 is carried out by evaluators from Czech research organizations, who assess the quality of results in an international context.

Detailed results of the evaluation are publicly available on the website of the Research, Development and Innovation Council. (available in Czech only).
